Have you been a victim of the latest scam? Today's News

Scammers are taking fraud to the next level and we’d like to know if either you or your clients have been a victim.

A travel agent recently wrote to TNW about a client who had tried to make meal changes for a US flight she had booked with her travel agent. Because it was late on a Sunday evening, the client thought she’d not trouble the agent and do it herself.  After googling the airline’s contact details, she called a number on what appeared to be the airline’s website.

The ‘airline staff’ then told the client that the travel agent had booked the incorrect flight dates and that the airline was willing to change it for a fee of R1 974 (US$150). The employee continued to contact the client, sending her emails and calling her – saying that if she didn’t pay the fee she would end up going to the airport without any tickets as they needed to be reissued.

Upon contacting her agent the client then learned that the person she had been dealing with had not been from the airline and was in fact a fraudster. We’d like to know if you have any experience with this type of fraud (where the fraudster impersonated the airline) and if so, we want to hear your story. All submissions can remain anonymous. Please write to tarynn@nowmedia.co.za .
